Reasons for Organic Farming
Organic farming is a method that involves cultivating land and rearing animals using the most natural ways. The biological material is used to mitigate pollution and stop any wastage of resources in the farms. Pesticides, herbicides or inorganic fertilizers are not used to grow any foods in organic farms. Genetically modified organisms are not allowed in this type of farming. Additionally, organisms that are genetically modified are not allowed on these farms. Ancient farming techniques such as crop rotation and biological pest control are the methods used on these farms. Only naturally occurring additives are used in the soil. The population of people on the earth has been increasing rapidly which has become a challenge in feeding all these people. Therefore, people result to growing foods using chemicals to meet the people’s need which is not healthy. Organic foods are the best, and we should always consider them first because of the few reasons that will be outlined below.
Organic foods contain large amounts of nutrients such as vitamins. This is because organic farms are managed sustainably. Study has been carried out to compare organic foods and commercially grown foods. More vitamins and minerals were found to be in the organically grown foods. The research went on to say that fruits from organic farms had a lot of vitamin C which the fruits from conventional farms could not match up to. Commercially grown foods lose all their natural sweetness due to all the chemicals that are sprayed on them. Soil that is well balanced and nourished causes the superior and natural tastes. Organic foods, quality is prioritized over quantity.
Diversity of agriculture can be maintained through organic farming methods. In this day and age, plants have started becoming extinct due to use of chemicals. In the previous century we saw over 75% of rare plants get destroyed. A good example is the potatoes, there were so many different kinds of potatoes in the market, but today there is only one dominant potato. This is a dangerous situation as it means pests have been destroying the remaining few species of potatoes which would mean that the world would run out of organic potatoes at some point in the future.
The society can show support to organic farmers by buying farm produces from them directly. The government has been showing a lot of support to the commercial farmer by giving them tax cuts and other incentives. Commercially produced foods which are mostly genetically modified foods have led to an increase of diseases such as cancer and diabetes. The government needs to involve itself in the production of organic foods to eradicate the effects of commercially grown food. The future generation needs to be preserved by making organic foods more available to avoid cases of certain illnesses.
